DIY Disney Countdown Calendar

Looking for a fun way to countdown to your next Disney vacation? Take a look at this super cute DIY photo countdown calendar. It is super easy to make, and is filled with lots of fun memories from your last vacation. A free printable template is included.

I made this countdown calendar for my kids, for our second trip to Disneyland. It is filled with lots of photos, and memoribilia from our first family holiday there. I thought it would be a fun way to build the excitement of our upcoming trip, by reliving the memories from our previous one. Although I have aimed it towards our Disneyland vacation, it would make a great countdown calendar for any vacation, Christmas, Halloween or even birthday, just change the photos to fit the occasion.

To make your countdown calendar you will need the following supplies:

Supplies

  • Countdown calendar template
  • Paper
  • Photos
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Gluestick
  • Pinboard
  • String
  • Push pins
  • Tiny pegs
  • Tickets, stickers and other memorabilia

Let’s get started…

Setting up your countdown calendar is really easy. Simply cut some lengths of string to fit across your pinboard, plus an extra 5 cm on both ends. My pinboard is 50 cm wide, so I cut my lengths of string 60 cm long. Form a loop on each end, and tie a knot to secure it in place. Cut off any excess string. Secure the string to your board by pushing a push pin through each of the loops, keeping the string nice and tight. Adjust the string length if it’s a bit loose.

Divide your pinboard into as many sections as desired (or that fit on your board). The countdown calendar number cards are 11 cm x 11 cm, and I spaced my strings approximately 14 cm apart, to leave a small gap at both the top and bottom of each row. I started my first string 3 cm from the top of the board. I chose to hang my pinboard in a portrait orientation, but you could of course hang yours in a landscape orientation.`

Make your number & photo cards

To make your number and photo cards, first download and print the Countdown Calendar Template. There are 31 days to print, and each card is 11 cm x 11 cm in size. They come in both colour and black & white options. I could only fit 25 cards on my pinboard, so couldn’t quite fit a whole month. Once printed, cut along the grey lines of each of your cards.

Select the same amount of photos as number cards. I printed my photos 10 cm x 10 cm, and left a small border around each photo. Now simply glue each photo to the back of each number card. You could also choose to put bucket list ideas or character images instead of photos.

Let’s hang out…

Using tiny pegs, hang each of your cards from your string, starting from your highest number to your lowest number.

Add some fun memoribilia from your last trip, or from things you have found to celebrate your first vacation. These could include tickets, patches, stickers, badges or drawings. Anything fun really!

Your countdown calendar is now ready to go! My kids loved taking it in turns to flip over each of the cards, revealing one of the fun memories from our last trip to Disneyland. It definitely helped to build the excitement before we left for this year’s vacation. There were lots of “I remember this” and “I can’t wait to do that again!”

The countdown calendar looks great too! And as each card is flipped over, it adds more fun and vibrancy to the display. I will definitely make this countdown calendar again for our next vacation. I might even keep some of the photos from each holiday, so there is a cute mix of the kids at different ages.

I hope you enjoy making your Disney countdown calendar as much as I did. It was so much fun putting together all of the great memories from our first Disneyland vacation. And so much fun to watch the kids relive those memories as they flipped each of cards over. I hope the calendar brings as much joy to your family. Have a great vacation!
