Paper Lantern Craft

Looking for a quick and easy craft to make with your kids this weekend? Why not try this fun paper lantern craft. It is so simple to create and makes a lovely decoration for parties, Christmas, Diwali or New Year’s celebrations. Just download the free printable template and you’re ready to get started.

To make your paper lanterns you will need the following craft supplies:

Supplies

  • Paper Lantern Template
  • Printer
  • Colour paper
  • Streamers
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors

Step 1

To make your paper lantern, download and print the template on colour paper.

Step 2

Cut around the solid black lines of the 2 rectangles. You will now have a lantern piece and a handle piece.

Step 3

Make the body of your lantern, by folding the lantern piece in half, along the dotted line.

Step 4

Keeping the paper folded, cut along each of the black lines.

Step 5

Unfold your paper and it should look similar to the one below.

If you would prefer not to see the black lines on your lantern, fold the paper back the other way, so the lines are on the inside of the lantern.

Step 6

It’s time to turn our paper into a lantern. Glue along one edge of your paper and wrap the other edge around in a tube shape, overlapping the 2 end sections, press together to secure. You could also use staples or sticky tape.

Step 7

Let’s add our handles. Take your handle piece of paper and apply glue to each end, right side up. Stick each end to the inside of your lantern to create your handle. You could also use staples or sticky tape for this step.

Your paper lantern is now finished! Time to decorate!

Step 8

Decorate your lantern with strips of colour paper, cut into scallops, waves or zigzags. Add a fringe of streamers to the top of your lantern, or flowing ones from the bottom. You might also like to use washi tape, fabric scraps, glitter or sequins. There are so many ways to make your paper lantern unique.
