DIY Travel Journal for Kids & Families

Want a fun way to capture memories of your family vacations? Why not make this super cute travel journal? It’s free to download, and includes lots of vacation inspired stickers, papers, and page templates. Simply print and cut out the templates, and you’re ready to go!

I made this travel journal for our own kids, after our trip to Disneyland last year. They loved making it so much, I thought I would share it with other families. It does lean a little towards theme parks, but will easily work for all kinds of vacation spots.

Before our trip I was looking for the perfect way to capture our memories, but all the travel journals for kids I found, felt more like school work than fun. This travel journal has taken me a whole year to put together and I am so happy with how it turned out. My kids and I spent an entire day reliving our favourite memories of our holiday, as we cut and pasted our photos into our travel journals.

Let’s get started…

To make your travel journal, simply print the elements of the templates you would like to use, and cut out. You might like to do this step for your children.

Make your front and back covers

  1. Print and cut out the Cardboard Cover Template. Place template on a piece of cardboard. I used a cereal box.
  2. Trace around the template and cut out.
  3. Select a patterned paper and print. Print and cut out the Cover Paper Template. I used normal copy paper for both the pattened paper and template. Place the Cover Paper Template on your patterned paper.
  4. Trace around the template and cut out.
  5. Glue cardboard to the back side of your patterned paper. Fold in the flaps of paper around the edges. Depending on the thickness of your cardboard, you may need to trim the corners of the paper, so they meet the corners of the cardboard.
  6. Your cover is finished! Now repeat for your back cover.

*If you would prefer you can also print your patterned paper onto thicker cardstock and skip the above steps.

Make your inside pockets

  1. Select a piece of colour or patterned paper. Place both Pocket Templates on the paper. You will have a large backing piece and a small pocket piece. You might like to use 2 different colours or patterns for the backing piece and pocket piece.
  2. Trace around the templates and cut out.
  3. Fold in the edges of the small pocket template. The bottom corners will overlap.
  4. Glue the backing piece to the back of your cover. Glue around the folded edges of the small pocket, and stick to the bottom of the large rectangle. Repeat for your back cover. You now have some handy pockets to keep special memoribilia in from your vacation.

*Don’t forget to hole punch 2 holes on each cover for your hinged ring clips. Take note of which way you would like the covers facing before hole punching, you don’t want to have one cover upside down. I made this mistake when sticking my pocket to my back cover… oops!

Let’s put together our travel journal

Thread your hinged ring clips through both your front and back covers.

Start by adding each of the day templates to your travel journal. Our vacation was 10 days, so I added a mix of the boxed day template and the plain day template. I also added some of the photo pages, dotted pages, grid pages, bucket list and calendar. Need some more pockets? Have a go at making these envelope pockets:

Envelope pockets

  1. Print and cut out the Envelope Pocket Template. Place template on top of patterned or colour paper.
  2. Trace around the template and cut out
  3. Fold along the central fold line. Fold in side edges of the envelope. The corner will overlap. Glue along the folded edges and fold the “front” of the envelope to the glued edges. Press with fingers to ensure it has adhered to the “back” of the envelope. Hole punch 2 holes on one side of the envelope.

Make as many envelopes as you would like. My travel journal has 3 inside. I used them to create little photo cards, that could be slipped in and out of the pockets.

Now for the fun part! It’s time to add all your favourite photos, maps and memorabilia to your travel journal. Handwrite quotes and special memories, or type them up and print them out. I typed our daily itineraries on top of the small note paper, to remind us what we did each day. Brighten up your pages with our fun stickers and use the alphabet to make headings. Add the included postcards. I printed the patterned paper on the back of the cards, so they look good from both sides. Have any stamps or stickers you would like to add? Go for it! Personalise your travel journal any way you would like.
